ACAT is a non-governmental organization , independent of churches and political parties, and an ecumenical association whose mission is to oppose the death penalty, intervene on behalf of victims of torture, and ensure respect for human rights, both internationally and in its own country, particularly for refugees and prisoners. ACAT bases its work on the Gospel and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
