spee_book.jpg

This volume is dedicated to the life, work, and legacy of Friedrich Spee (1591–1635), a Jesuit, poet, and courageous advocate against witch hunts, torture, and injustice. Contributions from renowned authors blend historical perspectives with contemporary human rights issues. From Karl Rahner’s theological interpretation to the literary and artistic approaches of ACAT Luxembourg’s projects, the book demonstrates the enduring relevance of Spee’s message. His role as a poet of spiritual hymns, a critic of witch trials, and a defender of human dignity and justice is brought to light. The result is a multifaceted mosaic of history, theology, literature, music, and art that powerfully underscores Friedrich Spee’s importance to Christian-inspired human rights work.

Friedrich Spee and the ACAT Luxembourg

Friedrich Spee von Langenfeld (1591–1635) was a German Jesuit priest, poet, and one of the first and most courageous voices against the torture and persecution of alleged witches. In an era dominated by fear and superstition, his book Cautio Criminalis denounced the brutality of witch trials and exposed the injustice of forced confessions obtained under torture. His writings combine profound faith, compassion, and a plea for human dignity that resonate even today.

ACAT Luxembourg (Action of Christians for the Abolition of Torture) draws inspiration from Spee's moral courage and unwavering defense of human rights. Like Spee, ACAT champions justice, compassion, and the conviction that every human being deserves respect and protection from cruelty. Through its projects, artistic collaborations, and choirs inspired by Spee's poetry, ACAT Luxembourg perpetuates his legacy, transforming faith into action and art into a voice for human dignity.
